Reports and statistics

A brief overview of AHP's performance over the past few years:

Total placements made since inception:

  • 1395 placements made in total since our inception
  • 622 foreign-qualified doctors (GPs and specialists) were placed in government-funded rural posts which would otherwise have been vacant.
  • 773 local-qualified health workers of all cadres were placed in local health facilities, predominantly those treating HIV.

Placements made during 2009:

645 permanent and volunteer placements made, of which:

  • 237 foreign‐qualified doctors (GPs and specialists) in rural government hospitals, in government‐funded posts which would otherwise have been vacant.
  • 408 local‐qualified health workers of all cadres placed mostly in HIV clinics.

Total placements made by post since inception:

  • 548 permanent government posts filled since 2006.
  • 165 volunteers placed in public service.
  • 655 placements made in NGO clinics.
  • 27 academic posts filled.

Country of origin of the foreign-qualified doctors recruited by AHP since inception:

AHP has a UK and US-based team which assists in marketing into these countries. As such, the majority of foreign recruits are sourced from these countries. The UK-based team also recruits into Belgium, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. AHP also recruits across the rest of Europe, as well as from Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Locum services:

  • Top performing locum service provider in tender won to provide pharmacists to Tshwane hospitals.
  • Over 20 000 hours of locum time provided in 2009.

  • Currently expanding to new regions and additional health worker cadres.

Putting this into perspective:

  • All 8 medical schools in SA cumulatively graduate approximately 1200 doctors annually. But, over their career, half of these doctors will move to work overseas.
  • This leaves about 600 doctors in SA.
  • Three quarters of these doctors will work in the private sector.
  • This will leave just 150 doctors working in the public sector within the country.
  • Of those remaining in public service, the vast majority will work in urban centres.
  • This leaves as few as 35 doctors from any single year of graduation serving the rural areas of SA.
  • In 2009, AHP placed 7 times that number of foreign doctors in rural hospitals.
